Gold-rush California had banned most gambling by the late 19th century, but in 1892 Gustave Frederick Wilhelm Schultze patented the first ever coin-operated gambling machine. Horseshoes relied on a supervisor to pay out winnings which, due to the ban on cash prizes, were novelty items.

The first three-reel automatic payout slot, Liberty Bell, was built by Charles August Fey in 1899. Three-reel slots are still the most popular style of slot today.
